EMR to deploy telemetry and control system for Kildare County Council

EMR helps Longford County Council to reduce energy consumption at the town’s waste water treatment works

Leading SCADA and instrumentation provider, EMR Integrated Solutions today announced it has secured a contract to provide real-time monitoring of the energy consumption at Longford Town Waste Water Treatment Works.  The new system allows Longford Water Services to better understand how, when and where energy is consumed while having the ability to also assess the quality of the incoming supply.

The initial system comprises of multi-channel power monitors providing information on performance at equipment level as well as at the incoming supplies.

Although Longford is the fourth smallest of the 32 counties in area (1,091km2) and second smallest in terms of population (38,970), Longford County Council have been active in investigating ways to reduce energy consumption.

Commenting on the project, Padraig Farrell of Longford County Council said:

“EMR demonstrated a strong comprehension of our outline requirements and have delivered a feature rich solution. The system has greatly improved our ability to see what’s happening on our plants in relation to better operation and energy consumption.”

Through the calculation of EPIs (economic performance indicators) EMR could demonstrate how each item of monitored equipment was performing. This insight allows Longford to use the better performing equipment while identifying equipment needing attention.

A secure Ethernet wireless 2.4GHz IEEE 802.11g/b LAN with 128bit WEP and WPA encryption was created on site to retrieve process data from including flows and dissolved oxygen levels for the calculation of the EPIs without the requirement for additional cabling. Encryption of this wireless network was sufficient to form part of the Longford County WAN.

With the addition of SCADA, the energy information retrieved is combined with process data and presented in customized reports relating energy loads to unit costs, time, equipment efficiency, control methods and environmental factors. The reports are emailed automatically to relevant personnel, eliminating any requirement to retrieve data manually and are now being reviewed by production and accounts departments on a monthly basis. Based on these reports, better work practices are being implemented/tested relating to how and when energy is consumed and associated cost reductions achieved.

ISS chooses EMR to upgrade HP’s on-site radio communications system

Leading communications and network provider, EMR Integrated Solutions today announced a deal with facilities management company, ISS to upgrade the on-site radio communications at HP’s multi-building campus in Leixlip, Co Kildare.

EMR will upgrade HP’s existing MPT1327 trunked radio system. This radio system provides essential site wide radio communications to all of the various user groups within the complex and they operate a large number of Motorola GP1200 user handsets.

EMR will manage the upgrade project and also made several recommendations to ISS and HP for enhancing the current system operation including new Motorola MPT1327 system handsets as they provide a more practical solution for the various staff communications.

Commenting on the project, John McLoughlin, facilities manager with ISS who manages the campus on behalf of HP said:

“EMR took over the servicing of our system from another vendor and has since then they have improved the overall operation of our system. Their recommendations for the updates to the system especially for the compact portable radio have been a huge success. The staff can now carry and operate the radios more efficiently. We are very pleased with EMR especially with the high level of customer and technical support they provide to our system.”

EMR arranged for engineers to inspect the MPT1327 system infrastructure. This comprises of Motorola MTR2000 high power repeaters and Fylde MPT1327 system and channel control equipment. EMR serviced this equipment and upgraded one the individual repeater transmitters.

The security control base operations equipment was also upgraded to a new Motorola GM1280 base radio to provide a resilient dispatch solution for control in event of breakdown to the existing desktop PC dispatch system.

The new system provides resilient, quality communications for large numbers of office and manufacturing staff.

EMR Integrated Solutions today announced a deal with multinational fuel corporation, ConocoPhillips to provide mission-critical voice and data communications

ConocoPhillips selects EMR to provide mission-critical voice and data communications for offshore fuel terminal

Leading communications infrastructure provider, EMR Integrated Solutions today announced a deal with multinational fuel corporation, ConocoPhillips to provide mission-critical voice and data communications at its island-based fuel terminal at Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay, Co. Cork.

The system provides a resilient, reliable voice infrastructure via two-way radio for onsite communications and a microwave network for high speed, data communications at the fuel terminal and beyond.

Due to the vast area to be manned and operated by the various staff they required an on site two-way radio communications system.  This radio system provides standard shore and a selection of marine operation channels, serving dual land and shipping operating channels for jetty and vessel crews during fuel unloading operations.

To address the requirement for a fixed point data network link EMR recommended a microwave data link solution. This system consists of two fixed microwave antennas terminated on the main land and terminal building. This solution provided a fixed point communications link with enough bandwidth to support critical data, internet and LAN based network services between the two remote locations.

Commenting on the project, Dave Lee from ConocoPhillips said:

“EMR have been providing our communication system for some years now. The solution that they have provided for extending the office data from the mainland has been so successful that it is now our primary operating system. The Motorola integrated ATEX radio system has helped to resolve all of the operational and staff safety issues that we had with the previous radio system. We are very pleased with the  essential services that EMR provide to ConocoPhillips that are critical for ensuring daily operation of this terminal.”

Up to this point, ConocoPhillips had received all their data and broadband services via an underwater cable system. This solution has proved troublesome in recent years and a modern data communications solution was urgently required as a resilient backup system.

This solution from EMR has been a tremendous success for providing this essential service, so that it has now become their primary system. The existing cable system has been retained as the resilient back up system for any potential loss of service from the microwave system

To meet the criteria required for the voice communication system, EMR recommended the Motorola Professional ATEX radio equipment. The GP380 ATEX model was selected as the operator handsets as this provided dual PMR and Marine channel operation. The large backlight display allows staff to select the correct operating channel for the shore or jetty required communications. A man down version of the radio and a dispatch base radio were also supplied to provide a man down emergency system to the remote site based staff. In event of an emergency an automated emergency call is reverted to the 24 hour manned control room providing immediate emergency assistance.

Cypriot national broadcaster signs EMR for multimillion euro network upgrade to faciliate digital terrestrial service

Leading communications provider, EMR Integrated Solutions today announced a multi-million euro contract with the Cypriot national broadcaster, Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.  The deal, signed in partnership with JD Dynamics and Netinsight will see the consortium design and build a replacement microwave and multiplex network, to enable CyBC’s distribution network to be DTT (digital terrestrial television) compliant.

The DTT network scheduled to launch by the end of 2010 will be the transport network for all DTT services, including radio, across Cyprus. It also will supply High Definition contribution services in a JPEG 2000 format from regional studios back to the main site in Nicosia. The transport network covers 11 main transmitter sites and four reporter sites. EMR utilizing NEC Pasolink portfolio of microwave radios and Netinsight utilizing the Nimbra range of multiplexers are used extensively throughout the network

Commenting on the deal, Grigoris Maliotis, director of technology and CyBC said:

“After an extensive evaluation process, we have selected the EMR/JD/Netinsight partnership as the top choice for delivering the national DTT network,” says Mr Grigoris Maliotis, Director of Technology at CyBC. “The partners’ proven success in media transport made them an ideal choice to help build the next generation platform for our transport and video network.”

The Nimbra 680 will be the core node, located in Nicosia, offering the ultimate in distribution and contribution flexibility when paired with switches from the Nimbra 300 series at the transmitter and studio site nodes.

The Microwave design is a resilient ring with some spur links to link the regional sites. The NEC Pasolink links operate at STM-1 and provide the necessary bandwidth for the multiplex network.

This form of distributed network architecture utilizing high speed microwave links to provide the bearer is fast becoming the de facto standard for new DTT network designs.

The new network will guarantee 100 percent QoS in distributing video services across Cyprus, provide scalable multicast capabilities and a single distribution and contribution switched network.

CYBC will manage the entire radio network through the EMR installed PNMSj management platform, which offers additional security and provides easy provisioning.
