EMR signs a telemetry contract with the Northern Lighthouse Board

Sea change for Northern Lighthouse Board with selection of EMR for technology contract

Leading utility networks and mobile telecommunications supplier, EMR Integrated Solutions today announced the completion of a €500,000 (£430,000) contract with the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) to upgrade its telemetry network and deploy a new monitoring system.

The Northern Lighthouse Board manages the authority’s navigation aids in the waters surrounding Scotland and the Isle of Man.

Encompassing buoys, beacons and over 200 lighthouses, the EMR system provides reliable, real-time reporting on the operational status of these navigation aids across NLB’s coastal estate, boosting the efficiency of marine safety for all vessels.

The contract was awarded to EMR following a competitive tendering process.

Based on Inductive Automation’s ‘Ignition’ platform, the system captures real-time data from NLB’s telemetry outstations such as unmanned lighthouses and floating buoys. Thanks to a user-friendly, intuitive management portal accessible on desktop and mobile devices, staff can see at a glance the status of individual navigation aids and can click into an interactive map to view more detailed, actionable information.

As part of the project, the EMR team is currently in the process of upgrading over 150 remote telemetry units (RTU), devices which communicate with the central SCADA* system.  These next generation devices provide always-on communications and ensure real-time visibility of the assets, facilitating a more immediate response to any alarm conditions.

Commenting on the award, Alan Cran, the Northern Lighthouse Board’s Principal Electrical Engineer said:

“The new system is operationally more effective and delivers better reporting.  Trend data allows us to analyse patterns of failures or individual events. This data analysis helps with better operational decision-making and assists us greatly in proactively carrying out maintenance work before breakdown occurs.”

System obsolescence was the driver for the current project.  A phased rollout of new hardware meant that any replacement monitoring system would have to be capable of processing telemetry data from legacy analogue outstations as well as new ones and this presented the EMR team with their primary project challenge.

“We chose ‘Ignition’ as it connects securely and seamlessly with a vast array of legacy and current industrial device protocols,” said Mark Quinn, managing director with EMR Integrated Solutions.

“It’s also an open, standards-based and scalable SCADA* platform which is vendor agnostic, addressing concerns that NLB had in relation to the use of proprietary technologies and potential obsolescence in the future.  Full system failover and redundancy ensures high availability and accessibility for what is a mission-critical service,” he said.

EMR has extensive experience in utility communication networks and critical national infrastructure.  Its business has grown steadily at home and in the UK and includes utility providers such as Irish Water, Severn Trent Water, Affinity Water, Northern Powergrid, Western Power Distribution and Greencoat UK Wind and Greencoat Solar.

Leitrim County Council leads the charge in the battle against ‘unaccounted for’ water

EMR Integrated Solutions recently announced its selection by Irish Water to upgrade the water utility network in Leitrim, in a six-figure deal.

The upgrade gives Irish Water greater control over the water distribution network, allowing for a higher degree of automation and closer management and monitoring of water flows, pressure and quality.

It also plays a significant role in the battle against ‘unaccounted for’ water. Read more

EMR has been awarded a €1.8 million contract to upgrade the Northern Ireland Water network from the legacy analogue radio technology to a state-of-the-art digital radio network based on the 4RF Aprisa platform.

EMR performs upgrade on island’s largest radio-based telemetry network

Northern Ireland Water (NIW) is a government-owned water utility serving a population of 1.7 million across the province of Northern Ireland. With the second largest network of pipelines, water and wastewater treatment plants in the UK, NIW operates the largest single, radio-based telemetry network on the island of Ireland.

This network has formed a key part of NIW infrastructure for the past 10 years and provides real time monitoring of critical infrastructure. In 2011 EMR was awarded a €1.8 million contract to upgrade the network from the legacy analogue radio technology to a state-of-the-art digital radio network based on the 4RF Aprisa platform. Telemetry upgrade delivers better management of Northern Ireland Water’s distribution network

Northern Ireland Water enjoys better visibility and manageability of its water distribution network, thanks to a telemetry upgrade, installed and commissioned by EMR Integrated Solutions.

The upgrade involves the replacement of 900 telemetry outstations or remote terminal units (RTUs), spread throughout the province. The RTUs take data from unmanned assets such as pumping stations, service reservoirs and water treatment works and transfer it back to the utility’s central control rooms, providing better remote monitoring, diagnostics and management of the water distribution network. EMR and the Ignition user group event for the water industry

Ignition SCADA User Group Event strikes a chord with county councils

Over 30 engineers and senior technicians from county councils around the country gathered in Dunboyne, Co Meath today for the first in a series of Ignition SCADA User Group meetings.

The event was designed to encourage information and knowledge sharing in SCADA networking technology and to discuss some of the key challenges facing the water industry in the months ahead.

Delegates heard from Mark Quinn, managing director of EMR Integrated Solutions who in his ‘SCADA 101’ presentation outlined the evolution of SCADA technology and focused on some of the key elements that are growing in importance in light of the new regulatory regime.

This was followed by a series of interactive roundtable discussions, facilitated by senior EMR staff which focused on five technology streams.  Delegates were given their choice of three such streams from alarm monitoring, network management, energy, water auditing and compliance reporting.  The alarm monitoring and water auditing streams proved particularly popular with attendees.

Travis Cox from Inductive Automation then exclusively revealed the Ignition technology roadmap to users, highlighting some of the key software releases and features coming down the tracks, all designed to deliver powerful analytics and simplified usability.

The afternoon session was kicked off by Mark Quinn with a look to the future of SCADA in Ireland.  This was followed by Steve Grainger of Halma Water/Radcom who gave delegates an overview of the use of GPRS loggers in the water industry.  Several case studies were also showcased, which helped to bring the technology to life.

Padraig Farrell from Longford County Council also shared his knowledge and experience of using the Ignition solution and this really struck a chord with delegates as fellow users.

The session ended with an open forum discussion on some of the challenges in the months and years ahead.

According to Mark Quinn:

“The event was a huge success.  Delegates really enjoyed the interactive, roundtable discussions in particular as it gave them an opportunity to ask questions and share experiences with each other.  Many attendees have already approached us to run another event and given our commitment to the SCADA industry and the critical juncture we all face, it’s something EMR will continue to do on a regular basis”.
